According to legend the most commonly accepted, it was in the Kingdom of Sukhothai (v.1220-1350), the court of King Pra Ruang (also known under the name Lithai) Brahmin priest who had a daughter named extremely beautiful Naang Noppamart. She was very intelligent and gifted artistic talents making it capable to make beautiful garlands of flowers. Her beauty and talent attracted the attention of the king and at the age of 17, she was admitted to the status of royal concubine. At that time, the Hindus celebrated during the 12th lunar month a party where they worshiped their three main gods (Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu) with lanterns mounted on long poles and the release of lanterns in the holy river Ganges to honor the goddess Ganga, "Mother of Waters".

Accompanying the expansion of Hinduism in Southeast Asia, these traditions reached the Khmer Empire, then Thailand, the first the Mon kingdom of Haripunchai then those Lanna and Sukhothai. King Pra Ruang wanted to create a Thai version of the Hindu festival and organized a competition of "Floating Lanterns" on the night of the 12th full moon. Naang Noppamart used his talents to make a beautiful boat, using a banana trunk as float and banana leaves to decorate shaped lotus leaves. His creation won the competition and the king decreed that henceforth this Kratong originally called Khamot, serve as a model for this new Thai ceremony of the Lights or Loy Kratong.

Naang Noppamart became the favorite of the king and led a happy life. To its credit, there are the Tumrub Thao Srichulaluck an autobiographical account on the history and progress of the ceremony of the 12th lunar month, or Loy Krathong. Legend or reality? Who knows? However, the history of Naang Noppamart adds a charming touch to the festivities of Loy Krathong and so far the one that wins the beauty contest Loy Kratong received the title of "Queen Naang Noppamart."
